Update on Organ Mountain Fire

Air drop on Organ Fire

The following is a message from Association president and volunteer fire fighter Douglas Hoffman:

For the past week a fire has been burning on the Ft. Bliss land in the
Organs, probably started by a live fire exercise. It has been
difficult to attack because of the very rough terrain and the fact
that the land there contains unexploded munitions from many years of
such exercises. There are Forest Service fire crews in place, and the
Forest Service, BLM and Ft. Bliss have also been using airplane and
helicopter drops of water and fire retardant. There has also been
smokejumpers deployed today in the vicinity of the fire south of
Soledad Canyon Road.

The Las Alturas Fire Department is on standby to assist BLM and we are
in constant communication with them. While there is no immediate
danger we continue to monitor the fire line and are ready to protect
any houses and structures in our neighborhood if that is needed. What
we do urge you to do at this time is to review your own family safety
plans, and make sure you are prepared for disasters, whether they be
fires or floods. We will make sure that everyone stays informed of
any developments on the fire and if any actions on your part are
needed the fire department will contact you. For any emergencies
please remember to call 911.

Rattlesnake Vaccination Clinic Scheduled

Calista Animal Hospital of Las Cruces has scheduled a rattlesnake vaccination clinic for Talavera area residents on Sunday, March 21st 9-11AM at the Fire Station. The cost is $20 per vaccination.

Everyone who lives in the Talavera area knows that rattlesnakes are a fact of life in our neighborhood. You have all probably seen them, like this guy, who showed up at my front door last September. While our Western Diamondbacks are not aggressive, they will defend themselves, especially against nosy pets. This is you chance to vaccinate your pets against rattlesnake bites. If your pet has not been vaccinated before, it will require a booster approximately 30 days after the first vaccination. Calista Animal Hospital has scheduled a second vaccination clinic for Sunday, April 18th, also from 9 – 11 AM at the fire station.

Calista Animal Hospital has requested that anyone who would like to take advantage of these vaccinations to please call the Calista Animal Hospital at 644-9721 and leave your name and the number of dogs you will be bringing. This is only to insure that clinic staff have enough vaccine on hand the day of the clinic.

Remember, Rattlesnake vaccination clinic on Sunday, March 21st, 9 – 11 AM at the Fire Station.

High School Traffic Update

TCA Board member Helen Zagona attended the Las Cruces City Council meeting pn Monday February 22. At the council meeting, the annexation of the new high school and traffic improvements were discussed. Here is Helen’s report:

Here is a brief update of changes in the situation involving the new high school traffic.  Yesterday the Las Cruces City Council did vote to annex the new high school area as reported in the Sun-News.  Many thanks to those who came to the Council Meeting.  Even those who did not speak helped our cause by being present.  The Council did notice our presence and listened to those of us who did speak about our concerns.  The Sun-News got some of the details of the plans for the roads, not all were correct.  Continue reading High School Traffic Update

Meeting Minutes Posted and Outstanding Citizen Award

Daren Bloomquist

At right is long-time Talavera resident Daren Bloomquist. Daren was presented with an ‘Outstanding Citizen Award’ at the February 20th meeting of the Talavera Community Association. The award was in recognition of Daren’s many contributions to the Talavera neighborhood. In addition to coordinating the neighborhood road cleanups for the past 18 years, Daren is a past president and founding member of the Soledad Canyon Homeowners Association (the forerunner of todday’s TCA), 11 year member of the Los Alturas Volunteer Fire Department, and has given his time unselfishly for the improvement of the Talavera neighborhood. You can read the full list of Daren’s contributions to our neighborhood in the minutes of last Saturday’s general meeting. The minutes can be found here, and on the TCA Meeting Minutes page of the web site.

On the Meeting Minutes page, I have deleted the minutes for all meetings prior to 2005. Five years of minutes is probably more than anyone wants to read.

Congratulations Daren!

Good Turnout for the Neighborhood Road Cleanup

There was an excellent turnout for the neighborhood road clean up this past Saturday morning. Clean-up coordinator Daren Bloomquist reported that 47 area residents participated. This is a picture of the Organ Mesa Ranch residents who participated.

Despite the high winds, there was a good turnout at the evening Pot-Luck and meeting. we had several excellent presentations on subjects that are important to Talavera residents, and legislative updates from Senator Steve Fischman and Representative Joseph Cervantes. The full minutes are currently being checked for accuracy, and will be posted shortly. We wil add an update when they are posted.
