Message from No Land Exchange Neighborhood Group
Important Update
THIS IS NOT OVER!
In their post about the public meeting on Feb 25th, the State Land Office wrote: “The Tribe will no longer pursue a potential land exchange for the parcel of state trust land near A Mountain as originally proposed, but will instead apply for an agreement to gain access to the parcel for traditional cultural uses.”
We are hearing conflicting statements from the State Land Office about what the State Land Office plans to do in response to the Mescalero Apache request for “access to the parcel for traditional cultural uses.” At our community meeting on the 21st, we will provide our latest information including a summary of the County Commissioner’s meeting on 10 February. We also encourage everyone to attend the public meeting on the 25th!
We invite you to join us on February 21st, from 6-7pm at the Talavera Fire Station, to share what we know about the proposed land exchange between the NM State Land Office and the Mescalero Apache Tribe. This is not an official Talavera Community Association (TCA) meeting. The TCA has been gracious enough to post this meeting notice on their website as an item of community interest. There will not be any food or drinks served before or after the meeting. The presentation agenda is below. We welcome your questions at the meeting.
1. Who is the No Land Exchange Las Cruces neighborhood group?
2. What is the Mescalero Apache Land Exchange?
3. What is proposed in the Mescalero Apache Land Exchange?
4. Information about the Mescalero Apache Land Exchange
5. What are the concerns?
6. Who is involved?
7. What are the short term and long-term goals?
8. Links and points of contact
We look forward to seeing you then!
